Saturday, April 22nd, 2006 marks the 36th annual observance of Earth Day.
Earth Day was founded by Senator Gaylord Nelson. At a conference in Seattle in September 1969, Senator Gaylord announced that in the spring of 1970 there would be a nationwide grassroots demonstration on behalf of the environment. In the largest demonstration of its kind in history, millions expressed their dismay over what was happening to the environment around them and their alarm over the indifference to it by the political leaders of the country. Thus, in April of 1970 Earth Day was born. |
